LESSON 4.4
EXERCISE 5A (PAGE 43)
STUDENT B
You think the best option is to hire two English language
teachers to give courses at Head Office. Try to persuade
the other members to accept your idea. Use the ideas
below and your ideas from Exercise 2b.
•
The teachers will teach British English and American
English.
•
You will be able to control closely the language
training they provide.
•
Staff will attend classes when it is convenient for them.
•
You do not want to use the nearby English language
school. You think staff will take too much time after
classes returning to Head Office.

Harper Lee
(1926–2016)
1
Nelle Harper Lee was born on 28
April, 1926, in Monroeville,
Alabama. Her name was the same
as her grandmother’s but spelled
backwards. However, she would
later gain fame under her pen
name, Harper Lee. Her father had
been a newspaper editor before he
became a lawyer, and her mother
was a homemaker in a small town
in the American south. It is a
remarkable coincidence that this was also the hometown of another
great American writer, Truman Capote, and the two would-be writers
were close childhood friends.
2
Lee moved to New York City in 1949 and got a job as an airline
reservation agent while she wrote fiction in her free time. By 1956,
Lee had written many stories and she finally found a literary agent to
promote her work. Then, a month later, her friends collected enough
money for Lee to devote a year to her writing without the need to
work, and she began to develop a story called Go Set a Watchman.
In the spring of 1957, Lee completed the first manuscript and sent it
to her editor, Tay Hohoff. The manuscript went back and forwards
between the author and her editor for the next two years until the
novel was completed in 1959 with a new title, To Kill a
Mockingbird.
3
On 11 July, 1960, the novel was published and it immediately
became a bestseller. Lee also gained a great reputation as an author.
In 1961, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction among other
wards, and in 1962, To Kill a Mockingbird became an Academy
Award-winning film, starring Gregory Peck. In 1999, it was voted
the ‘The Best Novel of the Century’ and it is still a bestseller today.
4
Although many authors would enjoy the fame that comes with such
a successful novel, Lee did not want any media attention. She
refused to give any interviews after the early 1960s, and she led a
private life away from public attention until her death on 19
February, 2016.
