Situation 1
Timothy Dawson lived in a penthouse apartment on
the tenth floor of his apartment block. It was a stylish
modern flat with a great view of downtown Seattle.
Every day Timothy would leave his apartment and
take the lift down to the ground floor. He would say
hello to Jones, the receptionist in the lobby, and then
go to work or meet his friends in the city. However,
when he came home again he would only take the lift
to the seventh floor. Then he would get out and walk
up the stairs to the eleventh floor. In fact, the only
time he ever took the lift to the tenth floor was when
it was raining. Why?
Situation 2
Jake Waterman was a hardworking businessman. One
day he got a phone call from his boss, who said that he
had to meet a new customer. The phone connection
wasn’t very good, so he didn’t hear everything that his
boss said, but he did hear that the customer’s name
was Patrick and that he would be at the Chez Nous
French restaurant at six o’clock. When he got there
at six, he noticed there were only four people in the
restaurant, and they were all eating at the same table.
One was a carpenter, one was a lorry driver, one was
a fireman and the other was a mechanic. Without
anyone saying a word, Jake went up to the fireman
and introduced himself. How did he know he had the
right person?
Situation 3
Annette Cooper was driving through Macclesfield,
a town that she had never visited before. She was
late for a meeting but she always obeyed the speed
limit. As she drove down Fitzwilliam Street, she
passed three cars that were going much too fast. She
didn’t approve of that kind of driving and she was
determined to stay below the speed limit herself.
However, when she was almost at the end of the
street, a police officer stopped her and give her a
ticket for dangerous driving. Why?
